(Yicai Global) April 7 -- The world's largest fully automated container terminal in Shanghai will start using hydrogen to power equipment at the port to reduce emissions.

Shanghai International Port Group’s Shangdong branch will build a production base for the low-emission fuel at Yangshan Deep-Water Port's Phase IV terminal within two to three years, Sun Jinyu, deputy general manager of the branch, told Yicai Global yesterday.

Moreover, an onshore power supply system will support port vessels, as well as lighting, solar-assisted heating, and power monitoring systems at offices to improve efficiency.

Opened in December 2017, Yangshan Phase IV is growing fast. Its throughput should rise by nearly 18 percent to five million twenty-foot equivalent units this year, according to the deputy GM. Last year, the figure jumped by 28 percent to about 4.3 million TEUs despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

SIPG independently developed the autopilot port management system, covering all terminal processes, and it is constantly being upgraded, said Sun.
