(Yicai Global) Oct. 20 -- The co-founder of Alphabet Inc.'s [NASDAQ:GOOG] Google Brain project Andrew Yan-Tak Ng will serve as the new chairman of Woebot, a chatbot that aims to help millions of people who struggle with their mental health, online  media outlet Jiemian News reported yesterday.

Ng has focused on the healthcare sector since resigning from his former position as project director for machine learning at Chinese internet giant Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU].

Earlier this year, he cooperated with a research team from Stanford University on a project to build a machine learning system to better understand electrocardiography. Ng believes that machine learning technologies could make contributions to mental health, which is why he decided to work with Woebot.

The chatbot aims to solve people's mental health issues by using techniques that originate in cognitive behavioral therapy. It focuses on helping its users manage their own moods by developing personal coping strategies for mental illnesses like depression and anxiety.
